What to Expect on Your First Chiropractic Visit
Many people experience neck, back, and general physical pain, which causes them to reach out to and visit a Chiropractor. That first visit can be scary prospect for a new patient if they don't know what to expect. Your first Chiropractor visit shouldn't be a stressful one, but a relaxing and worry free visit.
This article will tell you what to expect on your first Chiropractic visit.
Paperwork
The first step is filling out paperwork. This paperwork will include all of your medical history and your family's medical history. The Chiropractor will also want a description of the pain you have including anything that may have caused the problem, such as a car accident or a fall, and any other pertinent information that the Chiropractor sees as necessary to form a diagnosis.
Make sure to put down as many specifics as possible as it may uncover underlying issues with which the Chiropractor will help.
Consultation
Most first-time visits begin with a consultation. You may or may not receive treatment on your first visit, based on the consultation. The Chiropractor will go over your health history and discuss the issues you are having and what has brought you into the office. The Chiropractor will often test your range of motion related to body parts and your spine, which is all part of how the Chiropractor will form their diagnosis and treatment plan.
X-rays and MRI’s
Depending on the consultation results, the Chiropractor may require an X-ray or MRI before performing any adjustments, which may or may be done in house. If they do not have the machines to do these at their facilities, they will refer you to a hospital or office that they work with to get the X-rays taken. Once they receive the X-rays, they will go over what they see with you to understand how the treatment will work fully.
Adjustments
You may end up getting an adjustment on the first visit if the Chiropractor decides that they have enough information to warrant an immediate treatment plan. This treatment can be scary for many people who have not had an adjustment before. The best advice for those folks is to relax and trust that the Chiropractor knows what they are doing. When you tense up your muscles, it is much harder for the bones to move and, consequently, more difficult to adjust. Some people get alarmed at the loud popping that may occur during an adjustment, but that is entirely normal.
Afterward
You may feel some soreness or discomfort in the area that was adjusted for a couple of days afterward, which is entirely normal. When the bones have gotten used to being out of alignment, it takes a bit, and usually a few visits, to get them to stay put in the right position again. Make sure not to do anything too strenuous for a few days after an adjustment, as the bones can easily slip back into the wrong place. The Chiropractor will go over what you can and cannot do in more detail to ensure that you have the best experience after your adjustment.
